I spent a lot of time with Ray this year as we made several trips to talk to newspaper reporters up and down the state about CBIA, its legislative agenda, and the state of the industry. In our time together, I learned what his many friends and associates already knew - that he was thoughtful and articulate man who was a passionate advocate for the industry, as well as an effective leader for his company and for CBIA. All of us who knew him will truly miss him.

What an honor it's been to serve an association led by a man as thoughtful, warm, and sincere as our own Ray Becker. Ray was the kind of leader who brought eloquence, integrity, and depth of character to every situation. His leadership inspired us to move forward in the face of adversity and challenged us to rethink the easy answer to arrive at the right answer. His contributions and convictions made me so very proud to be a part of CBIA. Ray will be deeply missed by many.

Ray was a devoted advocate of the homebuilding industry and an unwavering booster of CBIA, particularly its members. At the same time, Ray saw progress in settling disputes -- large and small -- with homebuilding's toughest advesaries so that the important goal of creating more California homeownwers could move forward. Smart, earnest and good humored, he was emblematic of all that is good about the proud men and women of California's homebuilding industry. In memory as in life, Ray Becker is forever housing's ambassador of good will.

I first met Ray about 5 years ago. Always happy, always positive about life.

He had time to speak to anyone and everyone and could always look on the bright side of things.

He will be missed for what he gave to life, the Industry and to all of us his friends.

I personally became a fan of how he handled things. May we all be honored he touched our lives

I met Ray many years ago, "through industry" as they say, and valued him as one of the friends that I have had the privileged of making in this great industry. He was intelligent, articulate, he was a giver of his time and expertise, and, best of all, he was always upbeat, looking for the best in people and whatever situation that might be at hand. We all have lost a very special person with Ray's passing, I will miss him.

I had the pleasure of knowing Ray both as legal counsel and friend on various projects over two decades. Ray was first and foremost a gentleman and one was devoted to solving problems by finding common points of agreement with those he dealt with. I cannot recall Ray ever raising his voice, nor failing to acknowledging the perspective of others in his efforts. The quality of the communities that he developed are a real testament to his skill and patience.

Ray was an outstanding represntative of our industry. I recall a very touchy situation with Riverside County government a few years ago when Ray was working down there. Something having to do with a building moratorium. Ray was masterful in dealing with some very strong differences of opinion within the membership and effectively negotiating with an agitated board of supervisors.

As far as diplomats and leaders of homebuilding go, Ray was unique. He was always open to new ideas, while being strong and articulate in presenting our case. The way he handled tough situations as Chairman of the CBIA this past year was positively masterful. We met a few years ago, as Lennar associates from different parts of California, and he never failed to offer a kind word or advice on a complex issue. His passing really hits us all very hard. Wish I had thanked him more often.

I had the privilege of working with Ray Becker in the early 1980s when he and I were both getting started in the building industry at The Lusk Company. I learned then and saw many times since what a gentleman and trustworthy guy Ray was. I also got to meet Martha, a gifted vocalist of whom Ray was very proud. I later discovered that Ray was also a leader in his parish in Riverside, and I thought that if he ever decided on a career change, the ministry would be a great fit for Ray's skill and temperment. Rest well friend.

It is hard to believe that Ray is gone. I recall very well the first time I met Ray Becker. John Lusk called me into his office and introduced me to The Lusk Company’s newest team member. That was the start of several years of the two of us managing a number of Lusk developments together in the Inland Empire. Ray became a very important and respected member of The Lusk Company. When Lusk decided to open a division office in Riverside, Ray was the logical choice to be appointed Division Manager. He was a great communicator and what I call a “doer". He was particularly gifted in working with public agencies. At that point, Ray became involved in the BIA. I had the privilege of installing Ray as President of the Riverside Chapter of the BIA, where he put his leadership skills to work. Ray was more than a good leader in the industry; he was also devoted to his family. He took great pride in his children and, of course, in Martha's singing career. The family will be in my prayers as they go thru this most difficult time.

After Ray left The Lusk Company I followed his progress in BIASC, BILD and CBIA, where he continued to use his leadership skills. Ray was more than a co-employee; he was a good friend you could count on. I don’t know why Ray was taken so young but I am sure he is organizing the angels right now.

So long Ray. I will see you later

I was blessed to work for Ray on several entitlement projects. The two of us often found ourselves in someone's living room or corporate board room as we "sold the benefits/not the plan" and followed Ray's Rules for Community Outreach: Hear, Say and then Do. He was always respectful even when other's where not so to him. He was firm yet fair -- and he always understood the big picture/end game. I will miss him so much. The words "Well done my good and faithful servant" were heard from the heavens when Ray passed on. I will miss him.

We first met Ray when he joined BIA while working to bring Lusks Menifee project to fruition. He was one of the young Turk's like Ed, Theresa and so many others that brought great energy to the Building Industry in the mid-1980's and was so much a part of growing the Riverside Chapter. At our Arrowhead Board retreat Ray impressed everyone with his tech skills by being the first to show up with a laptop to fine tune our Boards budget during the retreat. Clayton Record, who mentored many of us and guided the Chapter, would have been very proud of Rays many accomplishments at BIA/SC and CBIA.

I had the privilege to work with Ray both on the Riverside Board and help with some of his projects. Who will ever forget the BIA Riverside Tribute to Ray that Ronnie V & the BIRays (ake the Rayetts)put on at Pechanga ... although the roast was tongue in cheek humor ... our admiration for Ray was truly from the heart. Martha, thanks so much for contributing some great personal photos to help complete the tribute ... all of them helped us to know Ray a little better.

Ray was always willing to help when asked and Lynda and I are so grateful to have known him ... so true are the many fine things already said about Ray ... he was kind, helpful and a gentleman in the truest sense of the word.

Our sincerest condolences to you Martha and family.

After graduation, I spent part of the sumemr in Colorado, working at Young Life Camp. Then it was off to William Woods College, where I pledged a sorority (Alpha Phi) and graduated as an Art Education major, with a minor in French. Unable to find a full-time teaching position, I was hired by HOK Architects (St. Louis) as a graphic designer. I got married, and then I got divorced. I met my current husband at HOK; Greg is a landscape architect/land planner, and we just celebrated our 29th wedding anniversary. I have been very fortunate to have worked at some amazing firms, including RTKL (Baltimore) and Walt Disney World Design and Engineering (Orlando). Greg and I lived for 18 years in Columbia, Maryland, where we raised our daughter, Stephanie, and where I was a Girl Scout leader for many, many years (all 18 of my girls earned their Gold Award, which is like Eagle Scout for Boy Scouts). Our daughter graduated from Salisbury University, and is now an RN at Baptist Hospital, Miami. Four years ago, Greg accepted a position running the Miami office of EDAW/AECOM, so we packed up our two American bulldogs and four cats and made the big move to South Miami. Currently, I am a senior designer with TGA Design (Coral Gables); we specialize in signage/graphics programs for the cruise ship industry, and have just completed work on Oasis and Allure of the Seas, the largest cruise ships in the world (lots of signs!). Life has been good.
