Professional Women In Building Council Elects New President
CBIA's Professional Women in Building Council has elected Jan A. Gruen as their president for 2011.
Gruen is the founder of Gruen Law, a law firm providing legal services to homebuilders and business clients in the areas of real estate and insurance-related matters. She brings years of experience and leadership at the local and state level, helping volunteer organizations and non-profits achieve their mission and goals.
Gruen has more than 24 years of litigation experience and expertise in day-to-day risk management, large-scale construction defect claims, contractual issues, subcontractor liability, loss recovery, warranty-related matters, unlawful detainer matters, employment issues and all forms of dispute resolution, including Calderon Act proceedings, SB 800, mediation, arbitration and civil trial work.
Gruen has been recognized by her peers as a California Super Lawyer for the last seven years and most recently received recognition once again as one of the top 50 female attorneys in Northern California. She was recognized as a 2008 Woman of Distinction by the East Bay Business Times, and received the 2007 and 2009 Chairman’s Award for her dedication and service to the HBA of Northern California.
Gruen sits on the board of the CBIA Professional Women In Building Council for her sixth year, having just been elected and installed as President Elect 2011. She is also a member of CBIA’s Risk Management and Member Services subcommittees. She helped established a $50,000 endowment between the HBA of Northern California Women's Council and California Homebuilding Foundation in the furtherance of education in the homebuilding industry.
At the local level, Gruen sits on the Business Industry Association, Bay Area Regional Board and the Executive Committee of the Board as Vice Chairperson of Associates.
Enjoying her ninth consecutive year of service, she continues to sit on the Professional Women in Building local board as co-chair of the Scholarship Committee, Advisor to the current President, and liaison to the California Homebuilding Foundation, having served as President of the Women’s Council in 2007. As Community Outreach Chairperson she established the annual Food and Gift Drive, now in its ninth year, to support existing HomeAid shelters. She continues to sit on the board of HomeAid.
Gruen is also a law school professor teaching Settlement and Negotiation.
