Merced County's chief planner says he's leaving post

After overseeing the county's planning department during much of the building boom and bust, Merced County's planning head said he was stepping down. Robert Lewis, who gave no reason for his abrupt resignation, was appointed as the county's Development Services Director in late 2005 under former CEO Dee Tatum. During the last five years, Lewis was at the epicenter of the county's building boom and then its almost total standstill. Some have laid part of the blame for the county's roughshod development on him.

Eureka moves forward with Jefferson School site purchase

A hearty round of applause and a few cheers greeted a unanimous vote of the Eureka City Council Tuesday to move forward with the purchase of the old Jefferson School site. With the unanimous vote, the council agreed to purchase the site but solidified no concrete plans for its use, or for the more than $2 million in renovations and repairs necessary to bring the building up to code. A neighborhood community group, however, seems to have both a vision and a plan.
